You may be feeling a dull ache deep in your shoulder and blow it off. You may just blame it on
your long shift, but there’s a possibility it could be a torn rotator cuff. A rotator cuff is the group
of muscles and tendons that surround your shoulder joint. They keep the head of your upper arm
bone firm within the socket.
People at risk for rotator cuff injuries are those who work in jobs where they’re required to do
repetitive overhead, arm movements. Another risk factor is tendon weakness running in families,
which makes one more prone to a torn rotator cuff. The next factor is age; the older one gets, the
more prone they are to rotator cuff injury. A torn rotator cuff is common in people over 60. Nonsurgical treatment options for rotator cuff tears include:
– an arm sling and rest
– nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs- minimize pain
– physical therapy- learn strengthening and stretching exercises
– steroid injections- ease pain and swelling
When you get an arm sling, you have to give your shoulder time to heal and you may need to
modify activities and possibly stop certain work or sports during the healing time.
