Black ice can be extremely dangerous and is a significant factor in road accidents and injuries during winter. It’s deceptive because it blends in with the road, making it difficult to detect. When you come across black ice, it can cause vehicles to skid or lose control, leading to accidents. For pedestrians it poses a high risk of slipping and getting injured. It’s crucial to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions while walking or driving in icy conditions.

Here are 10 precautions you could take to avoid accidents and injury:

  1. Stay alert: Keep an eye out for any shiny or glossy patches on the ground.
  2. Walk carefully: Take smaller steps and walk at a slower pace to maintain better balance.
  3. Wear appropriate footwear: Choose shoes with good traction to help prevent slipping.
  4. Use handrails: When available, hold onto handrails for extra support while walking on icy surfaces.
  5. Clear your car windows: Before driving, make sure all your windows are clear of ice and snow for better visibility.
  6. Slow down: Drive at a reduced speed to allow for better control and reaction time.
  7. Increase following distance: Leave extra space between your car and the one in front of you.
  8. Use the headlights: Keep them on to improve your visibility and make yourself more visible to others.
  9. Avoid sudden movements: Steer, accelerate, and brake gently to avoid skidding.
  10. Be cautious on bridges and overpasses: They tend to freeze first, so approach them with extra care.
