Physical pain is often referred to as a sensation that many define as discomfort at any part of their body. There are many causes of physical pain, ultimately leading to an unpleasant experience usually because of damaged tissues and injuries. People will feel pain when nociceptors detect damage at the site of injury, transmitting information through nerve fibers to the brain along the spinal cord for interpretation. Pain is very much a psychological experience as we interpret the severity of pain differently.

Normally, when experiencing pain there are many psychological factors that play a role in our perception of it. Situational and emotional factors exist when we feel pain and can drastically alter our ability to bare it as well. For example, when experiencing pain from a paper cut, many individuals will react to the sensation at its occurrence and will later perceive the pain as short-lived. However, when experiencing random aches and pains, many are more inclined to assume the worst as pain has been hard-wired as alarming among society. Considering this, the expression of pain will increase far more due to the fear of something being wrong internally. Another example is breaking a bone which many agree is profoundly painful. During such moments, there are many thoughts going through one’s mind, hormones such as adrenaline rushing causing the sensation of pain to be blocked off for a short period of time. Once an individual can conceptualize what has happened, they will become increasingly more sensitive to the pain they are experiencing due to the physical component as well as the psychological aspect.
