Foot pain is very common in many people as we are constantly using our feet to stand and walk for long periods of time. Our feet bare all our body weight on a daily basis therefore causing a lot of strain and pressure on the soles of our feet. Considering this, there are many causes of foot pain such as overuse, injury, and conditions that cause inflammation and more. For example, plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain that normally expresses itself in a stabbing pain that is normally felt in the morning or as you stand for long periods of time. This condition is usually due to the inflammation of a thick band of tissue known as the plantar fascia that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. This is most common in runners or people who are overweight as constant tension/stress on the thick band can cause small tears resulting in irritation and inflammation. Metatarsalgia is another common form of foot pain that is usually located in the ball of the foot, affecting the bones that connect the ankle bones to the toes (metatarsals). This is a very common cause of pain as these bones (metatarsals) support the weight of the body when standing, walking, and running. Many people experience a burning or aching sensation, shooting pain, tingling/numbness with this condition. The main causes of metatarsalgia are footwear that does not fit well, high impact sports, being overweight, structure of the feet (flat or narrow feet, high arch), and other joint/foot conditions like arthritis, bunions etc. Lastly, Morton’s neuroma is a condition that causes pain in the ball of the foot commonly between the third and fourth toes. The pain usually arises due to the thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves leading to your toes resulting in a sharp, burning, stinging, or numbing pain in the toes. The common causes of this condition are wearing high heels or shoes that are tight or do not fit well, certain high-impact sports, and foot deformities.
