Vertigo: What it is and Treatment

Vertigo is described as the false sense that your surroundings are spinning or moving. Vertigo is
more of a symptom of issues with balance in the inner ear(peripheral) or problems with certain
parts of the brain(central). The minor episodes can be unnoticeable and last for a short period of
time. Severe episodes can make it difficult to complete everyday tasks. If severe enough, the
episode can last for days or months.

Symptoms of peripheral vertigo include: dizziness, loss of hearing in one ear, problems focusing
the eyes, issues balancing, nausea or vomiting, sweating.
Symptoms of central vertigo include: double vision, difficulty swallowing, facial paralysis, eye
movement difficulties, slurred speech, weak limbs

Causes of vertigo include:
– Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (certain head movements which trigger vertigo)
– Migraines
– Labyrinthitis (inner ear infection)
– Vestibular neuronitis (inflammation of the vestibular nerve)
– Head injury

Most of the time, vertigo resolves itself without treatment. To help ease recurring vertigo,
patients can make changes in their daily routine to accommodate. The most common way to
manage peripheral vertigo is the Epley maneuver. This is to be done at home before bed every
night until the symptoms are resolved.

Other at-home managements include:
– Do simple exercises to treat symptoms
– Sleep with your head slightly elevated
– Get up slowly when getting out of bed
– Avoid bending down to pick things up
– Avoid extending your neck
– Move carefully and slowly

An option to professionally treat recurring vertigo is vestibular physiotherapy. Vestibular
physiotherapy involves exercises and techniques which you perform with a physiotherapist. Your
physiotherapist would tailor your exercise program (which you would do at home) to your
symptoms.
