At Revitamax Rehab & Wellness, we have different healthcare providers to choose from (chiropractors, massage therapists and physiotherapists)… each with an abundance of knowledge and unique skill sets to help our patients manage their pain and improve their lifestyles. Chiropractic may be a terrific option for you and I wanted to outline some more information about who they are, what they do and why they are valued in our healthcare system.
Chiropractors dedicate 4 years of their extensive training to the neuromusculoskeletal system and truly are the experts in assessing, diagnosing and managing (N)MSK conditions. Their ability to perform a comprehensive history and physical examination helps them determine a diagnosis or clinical impression which informs the proposed plan of management, which includes manual therapy combined with focused therapeutic exercise and lifestyle modifications. Their approach is holistic – which means they account for more than the site of pain or injury – but factor other related structures – and it affects function, quality of life, etc. As primary contact providers and diagnosticians, they are effectively able to refer to other complementary providers as needed as well.
Evidence and clinical practice guidelines support the use of conservative care, such as chiropractic, as first-line treatment (even before meds) for a number of MSK conditions, including acute and chronic LBP. Studies have actually demonstrated that the inappropriate use of pain meds, imaging and surgical referrals all lead to worse outcomes long term. Inappropriate (patient is not a candidate) referrals to imaging or surgery can seriously hinder a patient’s prognosis – and should be done carefully and mindfully. For example, when you look at surgical waitlists in Ontario, 9 out of 10 are typically not candidates, however, they wait 6-8 months to be turned away…and now are chronic, etc.
There are lots of great manual therapy practitioners out there to choose from (chiropractors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, etc), and patients should visit a professional they can trust, someone in line with their goals, and who is effective in providing care. As for myself, as a chiropractor, I believe in what I do, I’ve worked hard throughout my studies and journey as a healthcare professional and have been able to significantly improve patient outcomes in the vast majority of patients that I have been working with throughout my career.
Chiropractors have been traditionally known for spinal manipulation (adjustments), which have been proven to be highly effective and low risk. There are lots of other techniques I could use, such as therapeutic exercise and other manual therapy techniques, which I am extensively trained in and would be effective. A proficient chiropractor knows when and when not to use certain manual therapy techniques, based on patient safety.
